Samputu is an esteemed singer, songwriter and peace activist with impressive credentials. He has won the prestigious Kora Award for Best African Traditional Artist in 2003 and has performed at both New York’s ‘World Culture Open’ and Washington’s ‘World Refugee Day’. He himself is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, emigrating to Canada in 1998, subsequently moving to the American state of Vermont in 2004, and currently resides in Brighton.
Additionally, he is dedicated to his role as a cultural ambassador for Rwanda. Jean Paul Samputu focuses on spreading traditional African dance, drumming and singing, and educating people on the crucial messages of peace, hope, forgiveness, reconciliation and love. His work has led him to be recognised by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace as an ‘Ambassador of Peace’ in 2007.
